State Museum of Culture History of Uzbekistan

Journey Through Time

In the heart of Samarkand lies a treasure trove of history, the State Museum of Culture History of Uzbekistan, an institution steeped in the rich tapestry of Uzbek heritage. Within the embrace of the Samarkand State United Historical-Architectural and Art Museum, this venerable establishment stands as a custodian of the past, with roots dating back to its founding in 1896.

Over the course of its existence, the museum has amassed thousands of unique artifacts, each a testament to the cultural and historical evolution of Uzbekistan. Housed within the expansive structure are five thematic departments: history, art, permanent and traveling exhibits, archeology, ethnography, applied arts, and numismatics.

Step into the museum, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by the echoes of bygone eras. Bronze-age jewelry, Zoroastrian assuariys, ancient chess sets from the 8th century, and an impressive collection of paintings by renowned Uzbek artists from the early 20th century grace the exhibits. Notably, the museum holds the poignant film “Opening the Tomb of Tamerlane,” shot in 1941 on the eve of World War II.

The museum boasts an extensive collection of antique and medieval ceramics, metalwork, glassware, and intricate ganch décor. The numismatics fund showcases over 30,000 coins, spanning Central Asian states, the Black Sea territories, Ancient Greece, and Rome. Among the rarities are three silver cups from the 5th-6th centuries discovered in Samarkand’s Chelek settlement.

Delve into Uzbekistan’s cultural tapestry through the ethnographic collection, featuring 20,000 items of national clothing, gold-embroidery, and carpets predominantly from the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibit proudly displays engraved knives and metal dishes crafted by skilled Samarkand artisans.

A source of pride for the museum is the globe created by 19th-century Khojent educator Khodja Yusuf Mirfayazov. A testament to the global curiosity of its time, the globe is a window into historical perspectives on geography.

From its original location on the iconic Registan Square, the museum shifted to Ulugbek Street in 2010 following governmental decisions. After years of meticulous maintenance, the museum officially reopened its doors on September 1, 2014, inviting visitors on an immersive journey through the annals of Uzbek history.

Embark on a captivating odyssey through time at the State Museum of Culture History of Uzbekistan, where the past is preserved, cherished, and brought to life for generations to come.
