Fergana – the “capital” of the picturesque Fergana Valley, considered one of nature’s wonders. The city, named after the medieval scholar Al-Fergani, stands out from other cities in Uzbekistan: instead of narrow Eastern streets, it boasts clear planning, and in place of traditional Central Asian architecture, you’ll find antique buildings in a colonial style. Recently, Fergana has been adorned with art objects in the national manner, creating a contrasting blend of styles that adds originality to the city’s appearance.

Established in 1876, Fergana, initially known as New Margilan, emerged as the focal point of the Fergana region after the inclusion of the Kokand Khanate into the Russian Empire. Today, this dynamic city beckons travelers with its modern amenities and picturesque landscapes, harmonizing the past with the present.

The city’s early foundations saw the establishment of a military fortress, shaping the layout of new streets and a sprawling park. Architectural wonders like the Governor’s House, now the drama theater, and the Military Assembly marked the cityscape. Renamed Skobelev in 1907 and later Ferghana in 1924, the city witnessed significant growth in the 20th century and particularly after the republic gained independence.

In the heart of Ferghana stands the “Gate of Independence,” a symbolic structure erected in 1992. This monumental gateway, standing at 14 meters in height and 26 meters in length, signifies the city’s resilience and progress.

While Ferghana may lack ancient architecture, it compensates with picturesque charm. Venerable trees, including plane trees, poplars, and oaks, have transformed Ferghana into a garden city. Amidst modern developments such as luxurious hotels, a tennis court, and a vibrant urban market, the city retains its unique allure.

Around Fergana

Fergana

A Tapestry of Tradition and Modernity

Fergana’s suburbs, blessed with lush gardens and vineyards, offer delightful escapes. The village of Chimen, nestled in the foothills of the Alai Range, is renowned for its healing mineral springs. The spa resort “Chimen,” the largest in Central Asia, invites visitors to rejuvenate amidst natural serenity.

A mere 55 kilometers from Ferghana lies the picturesque Shakhimardan, known as the “Lord of the peoples.” This scenic area, a traditional haven for citizens of Margilan and Fergana, promises tranquility amid breathtaking landscapes.

Fergana, with its juxtaposition of historical legacy and contemporary vigor, beckons travelers to explore its multifaceted tapestry. As the city unfolds its story through modern amenities, verdant landscapes, and therapeutic retreats, visitors find themselves immersed in a journey where tradition seamlessly intertwines with progress. Fergana stands as a testament to Uzbekistan’s ability to embrace the future while cherishing its vibrant heritage, inviting all who venture here to discover the rich layers of its cultural narrative.

Why do people travel to Fergana?
Most often, travelers come to explore the flourishing Fergana oasis. Some specifically visit the balneological resort of Chimon. Fergana itself is of interest to those fascinated by history, offering a glimpse of one of the most unusual cities in Uzbekistan, created not by an Eastern ruler but by the Russian general Mikhail Dmitrievich Skobelev. Staying in Fergana provides a convenient base to explore the ancient cities of the Kokand Khanate, located less than an hour away.
