With the invasion of the Russian Empire, Samarkand’s grape-growing prowess attracted pioneers like D.M. Filatov, a Russian winemaker and entrepreneur. Filatov opened the first winery in Uzbekistan, showcasing the exceptional grape variety “Biishty” that earned international acclaim in Paris. Forced to leave during the Soviet era, Filatov left behind a collection of exquisite wines that were rediscovered during the winery’s reconstruction.
