The Ataullikhon Tura Mosque

The Ataullikhon Tura Mosque, located in the Sumalak Guzar neighborhood on Uychi Street, is considered an unusual mosque for Central Asia. Previously, there was a cathedral mosque on the site, but it suffered significant damage due to a fire in 1914 caused by an earthquake. After this, the imam of the mosque, Ataullahon Tura, decided to build a new building instead of the old one.

Construction of the new mosque began in 1915, with the son of the Namangan architect Ibrahim Usto Kirgiz as the lead builder. Ataullahon took on the main expenses for the construction materials. In 1918, disagreements arose between Ataullahon and the master Usto Kirgiz, temporarily halting the construction of the mosque. After several years, construction resumed and was completed. However, in 1927, by the decision of the Bolshevik government, a campaign against religious faith and religious institutions began throughout the republic. As a result, the Ataullakhon Tura Mosque was closed. From 1929, many organizations used the mosque building.

The mosque is an original monument with an interesting architectural and structural solution. It is a rectangular building with a small entrance portal decorated with three-quarter towers. The central hall is covered by a large ribbed dome with a diameter of 13.5 meters. The entrance gate is adorned with a carved starry pattern containing a winding vegetative motif.

The cylindrical drum on the outside contains monumental Arabic inscriptions. Strips of blue mosaic enhance the artistic effect of the building.
