Kokand
Tour Details

Kokand is an ancient and beautiful city that sometimes gets lost against the backdrop of the more opulent Bukhara or Samarkand, but is definitely worth a visit. During the Khanate of the same name, Kokand flourished, and this is still evident in its magnificent architectural legacy of those times – tiled mosques, tombs, and madrassas.

Most of the architectural wealth of Kokand dates back to the period of the Kokand Khanate, to the 18th-19th centuries. One of the most expressive sights can be considered the palace of Khudoyar Khan, a ruler famous for his ferocity and tenacity. This complex was erected in 1871 and is a real lush oriental palace, as if from the fairy tales of “One Thousand and One Nights”. In the middle of the symmetrical wide facade is a portal with a high pointed arch, on both sides of which and at the corners of the building are erected high minarets. The palace has about 100 rooms and the area it occupies is 4 hectares. More than 16 thousand builders worked on its creation literally under the lash, and the result was an amazingly colorful building both outside and inside, richly decorated with ceramic tiles, with azure domes, mosaic vaults and ornamental patterns everywhere. Nowadays, alas, only 2 courtyards and less than 20 halls have been preserved out of seven courtyards and a huge number of halls; but the palace of Khudoyar Khan still strikes the imagination. Today a museum of the history of the region is opened in it.

How to get to Kokand
Kokand does not have its own airport, so you need to travel here by ground transportation, for example, from Fergana or Khujand. It is not difficult to get to the city by train or car from Tashkent. Locals are happy to pick up several passengers, organizing a kind of transfer by cab, which is quite inexpensive. The road takes three and a half hours, but the way lies through a mountain pass, which can be closed in bad weather. But in good weather, travelers can enjoy beautiful views and the opportunity to buy delicious and inexpensive products from mountain residents right by the highway.

Program for One Day Self-Guided Tour in Kokand

Morning: Start your day at the Khudoyar Khan Palace, the symbol of Kokand’s rich history and architectural beauty. Built in 1871, the palace is a stunning example of Central Asian architecture, with its intricate carvings, colorful tiles, and grand halls. Explore the palace grounds and learn about the life of Khudoyar Khan, the last ruler of Kokand.

Next, head to the Jami Mosque, located nearby. This historic mosque dates back to the 19th century and is known for its beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Take some time to admire the mosque’s intricate tilework and ornate details.

Afternoon: For lunch, stop by one of the local restaurants or cafes in the area and try some traditional Uzbek cuisine. Be sure to sample some of the local dishes, such as plov (rice pilaf), shashlik (grilled skewers), and laghman (noodle soup).

After lunch, visit the Kamol-Kazy Madrasah, a 19th-century Islamic school known for its classical Kokand architecture. Explore the madrasah’s classrooms, hujras (living quarters), and mosque-ayvan, and learn about the history of Islamic education in Kokand.

Next, head to Dahma-I Shakhon Tomb, where the rulers of Kokand and other prominent figures are buried. The tomb is located near the cemetery and is a serene place to reflect on Kokand’s history.

Evening: In the evening, take a leisurely walk around Chorsu Square, the heart of Kokand’s bustling bazaar. Explore the market stalls selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of this lively square.

For dinner, dine at a local restaurant and enjoy more delicious Uzbek cuisine. After dinner, take a stroll through Kokand City Park and relax in the peaceful surroundings.

Optional: If you have time, consider driving (taxis are rather cheap) to the ancient town of Rishtan, famous for its original blue pottery, unique and incredibly beautiful – it is the most popular among tourists as souvenirs. Visit here the center of ceramists, get acquainted with the masters and their work and observe the process of making ceramic dishes. In the evening return to Kokand.
