Margilan Silk Factory

Margilan's renowned silk heritage

Margilan, renowned for its rich silk heritage, boasts a history steeped in the tradition of silk weaving and production. Situated in the picturesque Fergana Valley, Margilan’s silk industry dates back millennia, making it one of Uzbekistan’s oldest cities. Its strategic location along ancient trade routes facilitated the spread of its prized silk to distant lands, earning Margilan a reputation for producing silk that rivaled even the finest Chinese silk.

Legend has it that the art of silk weaving came to Fergana in the 2nd millennium BC, with a local ruler purportedly ordering his servants to clandestinely learn the silk-making techniques from Chinese masters. This supposedly led to a conflict between the two nations, highlighting the value placed on the coveted silk trade.

Margilan silk, particularly its renowned khan-atlas, is predominantly handmade, a tradition that has been honed and perfected by Fergana’s artisans over centuries. The process involves meticulous techniques for unwinding silk threads from cocoons and dyeing yarn, resulting in silk of exceptional quality and beauty.

The city is home to two major silk factories, one of which is the largest producer of khan-atlas in Central Asia. This factory utilizes modern computer-aided processes to produce up to 2.5 kilometers of fabric daily, meeting global demand for its exquisite silk products. However, for those seeking a more traditional experience, the “Yodgorlik” Margilan Factory preserves the manual methods of silk production, offering visitors a glimpse into the artisanal heritage of Margilan silk.

Established in 1972, the “Yodgorlik” Margilan Factory employs around 450 individuals, predominantly women. The factory produces a wide range of silk fabrics, including natural silk and half-silk varieties, totaling up to 6,000 meters per month. These fabrics, including the luxurious khan-atlas, shokhi, bekasam, and adras, showcase the diversity and quality of Uzbek silk.

Visitors to the factory have the opportunity to witness the intricate silk-making process firsthand, from cocoon to fabric. Additionally, they can purchase a variety of silk products, allowing them to take home a piece of Margilan’s rich silk heritage.

Margilan’s silk industry stands as a testament to the city’s enduring legacy as a premier silk producer, blending tradition with modern innovation to create exquisite silk fabrics cherished around the world.
