In a landmark decision set to revolutionize the travel industry in Uzbekistan, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has mandated the opening of rail and air ticket sales at least six months prior to travel. This directive was issued during a tourism meeting held on June 3, 2024, as part of a broader strategy to boost tourism and streamline travel processes within and across the nation’s borders.
President Mirziyoyev has instructed officials to negotiate with counterparts in neighboring countries to facilitate easier border crossings, as reported by his press secretary, Sherzod Asadov. The head of state also emphasized the need to refine the calendar plan of festivals conducted in the country and to revise the requirements for hosting concerts by renowned international artists.
According to the press service, tourists have faced difficulties in purchasing tickets for domestic flights and train journeys six months in advance, let alone within a two-month period. To combat these issues, officials have been tasked with launching a unified online platform that will provide information on all flights and the ability to purchase tickets. This platform will introduce a system of differentiated pricing for tickets sold at least six months before the journey.
The President’s resolution aligns with the Development Strategy of Uzbekistan until 2030, which aims to quadruple the volume of air transport. To achieve this ambitious goal, the annual growth rate in the sector must be at least 20%, as highlighted in a presentation in February. President Mirziyoyev has previously pointed out the high prices of air tickets and the insufficient number of domestic and international flights to meet the existing demand.
President Mirziyoyev’s instructions are a clear indication of Uzbekistan’s commitment to developing a more accessible and tourist-friendly environment. By addressing the current challenges in ticket availability and border processes, Uzbekistan is poised to become a more attractive destination for both domestic and international travelers. The anticipated improvements in the travel infrastructure are expected to contribute significantly to the nation’s economic growth and global connectivity, making Uzbekistan a hub of cultural exchange and exploration.
