Amir Timur Square, nestled in the heart of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and cultural legacy. Named after the renowned commander and founder of a vast medieval empire, Amir Timur, this square has been a focal point of Tashkent’s urban landscape since the 19th century.
The square’s origins trace back to 1882 when it was established by General M. Chernyaev, during the period when Tashkent served as the center of the Turkestan Military Command under the Russian Empire. Initially, it comprised a small park surrounded by notable buildings such as men’s and women’s gymnasiums, a normal school, and the state bank, reflecting the city’s administrative and educational significance.
At the heart of the square stands a majestic monument honoring Amir Timur, depicting the legendary commander astride a rearing horse, adorned with imperial regalia. Crafted by sculptor Ilkhom Jabbarov, the monument’s pedestal bears Amir Timur’s famous motto in four languages: “Power is in Justice,” encapsulating his legacy of leadership and governance.
Over the years, the square has undergone various transformations, including a significant reconstruction in 2009, which saw the conversion of the surrounding park into a vibrant plaza adorned with fountains and lush greenery, offering a serene retreat amidst the bustling cityscape.
Surrounding the square are iconic landmarks that contribute to its historical and architectural significance. The imposing “Uzbekistan” Hotel, the University of Law (formerly the Women’s Gymnasium), and the Amir Timur Museum are among the notable edifices that grace the square’s perimeter, each bearing witness to Tashkent’s evolution through the centuries.
A crowning jewel of the square is the Forums Palace, an architectural marvel erected in 2009 to host prestigious state and international events, including the SCO Summit. With its grandiose design and sprawling dimensions spanning nearly 10,000 square meters, the palace commands attention, adorned with majestic columns and crowned by a towering dome adorned with stork figures.
